This has got to be the most interesting weekend since a long long time.
The reason.. It is General Election 2006!!
9 days of campaigning had been disappointing on the ruling party side with little more than character assasinating James Gomez.
Ling convinced me to turn up for the WP rally at Serangoon Stadium. Together with Vik, my laoda who taught me so much. We creep/ gate crash / westle our way into the stadium. when the police try to close the gate on the crowd.. The crowd roared thunderously and chanted " Worker's Party! Worker's Party!"
Infact, there were so many people.. the stadium simply cann't fit them in.
What more can I say, Singapore Idol wannabes would have died to have this kind of attentionComing home on friday evening .. picked up the Thursday papers.. Heading reads:
A Dominating PAP is the secret to Singapore's success... hmm, has success indeed got air into the head of our leaders?
Came sat, polling began. Towards a more stable political system, is the reason for my choice. I believe for a country to be inclusive, citizens must be able to speak without fear or favour. More so should our political leaders should be. Being under party whip and toeing the party line, certainly requires one to be extremely brave to voice their opinion. Therefore only one way for alternative views to be expressed, through those whose entry into the parliament does not need to depends on the favour of the ruling party. I have spoke my piece. One view out of thousands of reasons why and how people choose and vote.
Soon the result was announce in the evening, Viktor had sms me all the results as they came in cos I was outside attending a friend's wedding. First result, Hou gang, LTK won with a resounding victory of 63%! then Chiam ST made a come back with raised margin of 58%, testifying his personal charms in his ward and the deep respect people have for him. AMK garner 66%. It is true that voters held different yard sticks for the ruling party and the opposition. The true measure of victory is in the hearts of the people, not merely what is presented in the media.
Aftermath of election:
The tide and sentiments are changing, the cycles of history repeats itself. While human affairs are rarely predictable, wise words from the past says..
Observant Government
An observant and perceptive government is one that looks at subtle phenomena and listens to small voices. When phenomena are subtle they are not seen, and when voices are small they are not heard; therefore an enlightened leader looks closely at the subtle and listens for the importance of the small voice.
This harmonizes the outside with the inside, and harmonizes the inside with the outside; so the Way of government involves the effort to see and hear much.
Thus when you are alert to what the people in the lower echelons have to say, and take it into consideration, so that your plan include the rank and file, then all people are your eyes and a multitude of voices helps your ears. This is the reason for the classic saying, “A sage has no constant mind - the people are the sage’s mind.”
I think Mr Goh indeed has done this remarkably well!
